Intro to Night Sky Photography, Oct-Nov 2017

This is an introductory in-depth workshop about wide field night sky photography with digital SLR or mirrorless cameras (not through telescopes). How to shoot starscapes, night sky landscapes, eclipses, the moon, the sun and astronomical phenomena. Two classes will be in-the-field sessions of shooting the night sky.

Equipment: students should have a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses and a tripod. Smaller point and shoot cameras usually aren’t good for this kind of photography.


Class Schedule

Tuesday, Oct 17: The beauty of the night sky, composition, visualizing, camera settings. Bring just camera to class.

Tuesday, Oct 24: Camera settings-part II, plus equipment, shooting techniques, planning, using charts and software. Bring camera to class.

Saturday, Oct 28: Field trip to Central Park– working with camera in the dark and we’ll shoot the skyline.

Wednesday, Nov.1: Discuss field trip images. Processing: will demonstrate computer processing of the images, adjusting brightness, color. Optional: bring laptop computer to class.

Tuesday, Nov 7: Processing-part II, adjustments, making star trails. Optional: bring laptop computer to class.

Saturday, Nov 11: Field trip to Jenny Jump State Park in New Jersey to photograph from a dark sky site.


(Please be flexible on the field trip dates since weather can alter our schedule.)


Instructor: Stan Honda is a professional photographer based in New York City. He has spent over 34 years as a photojournalist covering national and international stories, the last 17 years for Agence France-Presse. He now concentrates on independent projects including the night sky and gives workshops in New York and the southwest. Stan is a board member of the AAA and writes a photography column for Eyepiece.

Time:  classes start at 6:30 PM and go until 8:30 PM.

Location: all classes are held at Cicatelli Center, 505 8th Ave, at 35th St. in Manhattan, 20th Floor (except the Oct 28 and Nov 11 field trips).
