The AAA emblem was adopted by the Board of Directors in 1947.

The design incorporates the mathematical symbol for infinity entwined about a five-pointed star.

The letter symbols within the star are those of the astrophysicist: E represents energy; C the velocity of light; the Greek letters nu (ν) and lambda (λ) signify respectively the frequency and wavelength of light; and h, the empirical mathematical constant of Max Planck's quantum theory.
