AAA OBSERVING AT RIVERSIDE PARK
The AAA holds observing sessions at Riverside Park with the cooperation of the New York City Parks Department. The location is quite attractive and convenient, right along the Hudson River esplanade. Those coming by car can pull off the West Side Highway directly into a parking lot. The site is quite dark by New York City standards.
Directions: By car (refer to the map): FREE PARKING IS AVAILABLE. Heading north on the West Side Highway: Take the "West Side Highway South" exit (1), circle around on the ramp, then before joining the highway exit right into a parking lot (2). On the way home, to head south simply exit the parking lot onto the Highway.Heading south on the West Side Highway: First take the "96th Street/West Side Highway North" exit (3) and circle around to enter the highway going north (4). Do NOT exit at 95th or 96th Street, but continue a short distance further to exit at "West Side Highway South" (1). Don't worry -- we are not in an infinite loop. Continue on this exit ramp exiting right into a parking lot (2) before rejoining the highway. On the way home, to head back north first exit the parking lot onto the Highway (heading south), then take the "96th Street/West Side Highway North" exit (3).Local traffic entering at 96th Street: Enter the highway going north (5). Almost immediately take the "West Side Highway South" exit (1) and continue as described above. On the way home, exit the parking lot onto the Highway (heading south), take the "96th Street/West Side Highway North" exit (3), then exit at 95th or 96th Streets.From the lot walk down some steps right to the observing site (X). By subway: Take the 1, 2, 3, 9 (7th Ave Local or Express) trains to 96th Street. Walk up a block on Broadway to 97th Street and then west two blocks to Riverside Drive. Cross Riverside Drive at this point (6) and follow a trail heading north (right). Proceed a few blocks towards the soccer field, make a left onto the track surrounding the field (7), then another left off the track (8). Your path will now take you towards a tunnel underneath the West Side Highway. Proceed through the tunnel, bear left at the fork (9), and walk south a few blocks along the river until just before you reach the tennis courts (X). That's where we'll be. Take the 6 (Lexington Ave Local) train to 96th Street station. Take the M96 crosstown bus west to the last stop. Proceed as above. Take B, C (6th Ave/8th Ave Local) trains to 96th Street. Take the M96 crosstown bus west to the last stop. Proceed as above.
